Belize Travel Basics

Language: The official language of Belize is English, due to its former status as a colony known as British Honduras.  Many Belizeans also speak a creole patois known as Kriol.

Currency: Belize currency is known as the Belize Dollar, abbreviated as BZ$.  The exchange rate is locked at 2 BZ$ to 1 USD.  You do not need to exchange US Dollars when you arrive in Belize; most merchants will accept it, but might return change in BZ$.  Try to take newer bills in denominations of $20 or smaller.  ATMs are available in most tourist destinations.

Belize cuisine:  Rice and beans with stew chicken is a Belizean staple, served with a side of plantains.  The Maya influence in Belize is still seen though foods like tamales and marinated cochinita pibil pork.  And of course, ceviche, fresh fish and seafood are abundant.  Belize’s most popular beer is Belikin, available in lager and stout.

Souvenirs: Popular souvenirs of Belize are woven baskets, artisan wood carvings, Marie Sharp’s hot sauce, chocolate, and One Barrel Rum.

Instagram tips: Get ready with your punniest captions, including “You better Belize it,” “The snorkeling was un-Belize-able,” and “Belize it or not, I’m staying an extra week.”

Safety in Belize: Find updated Belize information and advisories from the US State Department here.

Where to Stay in Belize for…

  • Nature Experiences Stay in San Ignacio, Cayo District to visit the adventurous ATM Cave (Actun Tunichil Muknal). In Placencia or Hopkins, kayak in the Placencia lagoon, spend a day at Monkey River or Bocawina National Park, or visit the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and Jaguar Preserve.
  • Seeing Ruins Stay in San Ignacio as a good base for visiting Mayan ruins at Cahal Pech, Xunantunich, Caracol, or Lamanai.
  • Snorkeling and Scuba Diving In Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker, you can easily join day trips to the Belize Barrier Reef, Shark Ray Alley, and the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. In Placencia, take a day trip to Laughing Bird Caye or the Silk Cayes, or swim with whale sharks at Gladden Spit in the spring.
  • Best Beaches Stay in Placencia to visit beaches of Maya Beach, Seine Bight and Placencia Village, as well as day trips to nearby cayes. Ambergris Caye has many beach options, but the best are in the north and the south of the island. Hopkins Village Beach in the Garifuna community of Hopkins has a five-mile stretch of sandy white coastline.
  • Luxury Stays For luxury Airbnb Belize stays, check out Ambergris Caye or rent a private island!

Recent guest review: This place is every bit as good as it looks. We’ve stayed everywhere in Belize, and what the owner has here is magic in the natural beauty that has been merely enhanced by authentic, yet classy accommodations. What no one else has that truly makes the experience is the phenomenal 4 staff members that have you sad to leave because you feel like you are losing family as the boat pulls away. If you are thinking about this place, stop thinking and go. The location makes you not need excursions, the staff make you not miss a traditional resort experience as the food is phenomenal and the seclusion is what a tired soul needs for a break. We will be back, and referring our friends.

Located within walking distance of a dive shop, restaurants, and beach bars, and just a few minutes from downtown San Pedro shopping, restaurants and nightlife. It gets great reviews for location, rooftop views, and helpfulness of the hosts.

Recent guest review: This was the perfect location for our trip. Located just North of town it was a quick easy cart ride to get anything we needed, a quick ride to some very cool spots as you go North toward secret beach and a great location to just hang and not go anywhere if you choose. The restaurant next door is great, there is fishing, snorkeling and diving right next door yet it feels very secluded on Mike’s property. We will surely stay again if we make it back to Belize!

Relax in luxury in this 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo in the heart of San Pedro. It has a full kitchen, living and dining space, a shared pool and is just steps to the beach. The superhost gets rave reviews for her helpfulness and local tips. This is a great stay for a couple or friends who want to be close to town but in a quiet community.

Recent guest review: Very stylish/large apt in a GREAT location. You’re right at the south end of town, so it’s quiet but you’re a 5 minute walk from GREAT food, bars, activities, etc. The space is very stylish with two massive bathrooms, so it felt very luxurious for 2 people. All the friends we met were jealous. 🙂 Lisa and her team were very responsive (picked us up at airport, organized a golf cart rental, suggested day trips, etc). Would not hesitate to recommend for your trip to San Pedro!

Recent guest review: This is a wonderful and well-kept home that is right on the beachfront. The location is amazing, and the home itself is excellent for larger groups — we had eight, which fit pretty comfortably. It’s convenient to use golf carts to access the various attractions on San Pedro (restaurants, snorkeling, etc.) but the home itself is in a quieter spot that is very nice (but not overly remote). We loved staying here and highly recommend it!

Airbnb Caye Caulker Stays

Caye Caulker is the most laid-back beach destination I’ve experienced. You can walk from one end of the island to the other in about 20 minutes, or hop on a golf cart taxi from the ferry dock to get to your Airbnb. Be sure to take a snorkeling day trip to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve or Shark Ray Alley, where you can swim with nurse sharks, rays, and sea turtles. And the Lazy Lizard Bar at a spot called the Split is THE place to be on the island – for swimming, drinks, sunset, and a party atmosphere all day long!

Firefly Moon | Tiny House Airbnb in Caye Caulker

$ · 2 guests · 1 bedroom · 1 bed · 1 bath · Wifi · TV · Kitchen · Pool · AC

Firefly Moon - Airbnb Caye Caulker Belize

Firefly Moon wins hands-down for the cutest Belize Airbnb! Thoughtfully laid out to maximize space, this Airbnb has a loft queen bed, lounge area with a TV and couch, plus kitchen and dining area. It shares the pool in Firefly Garden with two other rentals, but the pool has three areas for a more privacy. Relax on your own outdoor deck and use the community’s barbecue, or hop on the provided bikes to go anywhere on the island in just a few minutes.

Recent guest review: Amazing, amazing, amazing! If you’re able to book this gem, consider yourself lucky. Bobbi’s place is beautiful, the pool is a great, and you’re close to town without being right in the action. If you like being a quick walk or bike ride away from restaurant, cafes, and shops, but want a quiet place, this is it.

This affordable Caye Caulker stay has space for up to 5 guests in its two bedrooms and two baths. It offers a kitchenette, living and dining area, and a shared pool and deck with barbecue. Located just blocks from the ocean and grocery stores, restaurants, and the famous swimming place, The Split.

Recent guest review: This is such a great place to stay while in Caye Caulker. It is walking distance to everything, and it is a great place to hang out by the pool after a day out and about, or in between activities. Having a 9-year old daughter, this was perfect as she would entertain herself in the water for hours while we got some downtime. The house was clean with two nice bedrooms with A/C units in each and their own bathrooms with showers! With the kitchen/living space in the middle, this was a really functional space for cooking as well. We enjoyed the company of the guests at the other two units as well.

Ocean View Caribbean Cabana | Caye Caulker Airbnb

This cheery cabana is just steps to the beach and pier with several private swimming areas. At the end of the pier is a covered palapa with hammocks. Each guest is assigned a bicycle for getting around, and kayaks are also available. Relax in a hammock or chairs on the covered porch or at the hammocks at the dock, and stargaze at night!

Recent guest review: Great spot on the island. It’s quiet, safe, hot water, nicely maintained, lots of extras like bikes and beach towels. Juan was an exceptional host. As female travelers we felt very safe and at home. I checked out lots of places during my week down there and I would stay here again for sure. We stayed in #5 which was perfect as it wasn’t attached to other units. Take mosquito repellent- that’s the only minus of the whole island in my book.

Highly recommend it, I’ll def be back as soon as I can.

PUR Caribbean Beach Cabanas | Airbnb Placencia Belize

4 guests · 2 bedrooms · 2 beds · 2 baths · WiFi · TV · Kitchen · Pool · AC

Caribbean Beach Cabanas - Placencia Airbnb
Images: Airbnb

Caribbean Beach Cabanas is a stylish beachfront Placencia resort, conveniently located on the Placencia Sidewalk, but far enough away that it is secluded and peaceful. It has a full kitchen, balcony, and dining and living area. The resort also has a pool, beach area, sun deck, free parking, and complimentary paddleboards, kayaks, and bikes.

It has spectacular reviews for attentive service, and is perfect for couples, families and friends visiting Placencia.

Recent guest review: What a GEM! Everything and I mean everything about this place is special. The rooms are impeccably styled, the location is smack on the beach and close to restaurants and bars. The service is phenomenal and you have every amenity you would wish for. PUR is a boutique hotel with very few rooms but that makes it perfect to meet a few fun guests at the bar but is big enough to find your solace on an empty hammock on the sands. We had the most memorable New Years there and it was the best way to stay goodbye to the awful 2020 year. I guess the only hard part of our entire stay was saying goodbye.

Getting to Belize

Belize’s international airport Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) is located in Belize City. From there, you can rent a car, hop on a bus, or hop on a flight to other cities. You can also take a water taxi/ferry to Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye.

Belize Airlines

Two airlines operate within Belize: Maya Island Air and Tropic Air. I ended up flying both during my travels there, and both were fine. The planes are very small, though – I was surprised to be able to sit next to the captain! Your flight might also make stops at other airports along the way to let some passengers off and allow others to board.

On one of my trips back to Belize City, our flight stopped at both the Belize City Municipal Airport (TZA) and the Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE). Just ask the captain to be sure you’re getting off at the right stop.

Note that Tropic Air has a bit better reviews on TripAdvisor. Also when I booked with Maya Island Air, there was no confirmation page, which caused me to think the sale didn’t go through. I later received two confirmations and realized I had double booked. After talking to customer service and following up via email, I did get refunded, but it could not be credited back for two weeks.
