What is Amazon Prime Day?

Typically, Prime Day happens in mid-July, a sort of summer shopping frenzy for deal lovers.  It’s a great way to plan ahead and save on favorite travel gear and gifts for travelers.

For 2020, Prime Day was delayed and is now scheduled for Tuesday & Wednesday October 13 and 14.  It officially begins at 12 midnight on October 13 (3am Eastern).  This means we’re basically kicking off the holiday shopping season 6 weeks early!  This year Amazon will be highlighting small business sellers and advance deals as well as regular Prime Day deals.

Do I Need to Have Amazon Prime to Get the Deals?

Yes, but luckily, you can sign up for a free 30-day Amazon Prime Trial and take advantage of all the Prime Day deals! Just be sure to cancel before the end of the trial, unless you decide to keep the membership (which renews on an annual basis for regular memberships).

Are Other Retailers Having Sales for Prime Day?

Yes!  This year, both Target and WalMart are having competing sales on the same days.  Target’s will run October 13 and 14 as Target Deal Days, and Walmart’s Big Save Event is October 11-15 starting at 7pm on the 11th.  Target’s deals will even include same-day delivery and store pickup on some items.  They’ll also feature early deals ahead of the sale.

I’ll keep an eye on other retailers like Target, Walmart, and B&H Photo for great deals for travelers, too.

How Does Amazon Prime Day Work?

Amazon has several different types of promotions for Prime Day.

  • Lightning Deals are promotions on specific items for a limited time – sometimes only for a few minutes until the item sells out! The purhase window for these items is staggered throughout the days of Prime Day. Follow the steps below to find out how to set alerts for Lightning Deals.
  • Spotlight Deals usually are on items with greater inventory, so there’s more of a chance you’ll be able to get these items. But if you see something you know you want, be sure to buy, since they can sell out at any time.
  • Gold Box Deals of the Day typically last 24 hours before being replaced by other promotions.

Steps to Get Ready for Prime Day

  1. Be sure you have an active Amazon Prime membership on October 13
  2. Download the Amazon app and go to “Settings>Notifications” to enable alerts
  3. Once Prime Day deals are active, you’ll be able to see current deals plus previews of upcoming deals in the Prime Day Portal
  4. Add Lightning Deals (limited-time items) to your wish list by clicking “watch this deal” to get an alert
  5. Bookmark or pin this article as well – I’ll be updating throughout the day with travel deals from Amazon, Target, and other retailers.  I’ll also save great Prime Day travel deals in a list at my Amazon shop here
  6. Buy your favorite items as the deals become available!

What Kind of 2020 Prime Day Travel Deals Can We Expect?

For the past few years, Amazon has had deals on electronics, laptops, luggage, headphones, packing cubes and aids, and travel gear like adapters, backpacks, and clothing.  They also have deals on Amazon brand items like Kindles, Echo speakers and their AmazonBasics line.
