• Staying on a motu offers a secluded and tranquil experience, making you feel like you’re on a private island. Motu resorts often have bungalows facing the majestic Mount Otemanu, for incredible sunrise or sunset views surrounded by clear blue lagoons. However, while motu resorts often offer boat shuttles to the main island, it’s still less convenient than simply walking or taking a short drive (some might call it a Bora Bora chore-a chore-a). These resorts are also pricier, and the transfers can be an additional fee.

How Much Do Bora Bora Overwater Bungalows Cost?

Bora Bora is a luxury destination, and over-the-water accommodations are some of the most deluxe and sought-after room categories. The pricing also depends on the resort, the time of year you travel, and the room type and amenities you select.

With the exception of the budget bungalows on this list, prices start around $900-$1500/night ($1100 to $2300/night during high season) for overwater bungalows in Bora Bora. And that’s before taxes and fees, just for the room. It also doesn’t include meals, although many of the resorts offer packages with breakfast or breakfast and dinner.

Most Expensive Bora Bora Overwater Bungalows

The St. Regis, The Four Seasons, and The Conrad are the biggest splurges, starting around $1400/night for their overwater bungalows. Prices go up for rooms with better views, pools, and 2-bedrooms, plus during high season.

Mid-Range Bora Bora Bungalows

Next are Le Taha’a and Le Bora Bora, both by Pearl Resorts, at around $1200/night, and Intercontinental Thalasso at $1300. When Sofitel and The Westin reopen, they will probably be in this range as well.

Intercontinental Le Moana is my pick for best value, with their king beach view bungalows starting around $900. Since this resort is on the main island, travelers here can also plan to dine more easily at restaurants off-resort to have more variety and less expensive choices. It’s also within walking distance to a minimarket. Inter-resort water shuttles run between Le Moana and Thalasso at regular intervals if you want to use the amenities there (for a fee – although this is waived in some cases like if you have a spa treatment reservation).

Any Other Hacks to Save on Bora Bora Overwater Bungalows?

Travelers have gotten creative on less expensive ways to visit Bora Bora! This includes things like splitting your treservation with stays at overwater and regular resort rooms , booking in advance, and traveling during the low season.

Credit Card and Loyalty Points

Several resorts on this list are part of larger chains, where loyalty points can be earned or used to book. The St. Regis, Le Meridien, and Westin are part of the Marriott portfolio, while The Conrad belongs to the Hilton brand. And Sofitel is part of Accor Live Limitless (and a Capitol One hotel transfer partner).

So if you’re a points person, get to hacking!

Savvy travelers also recommend packing snacks in your luggage, as well as visiting the duty-free shop at your international transfer connection. Travelers entering Tahiti can bring 2 liters of alcohol – either in your checked luggage or the sealed duty free bag.

While mini bar mixers add up, there are also tasty powdered drink mixers and Skittles To Go packets. Should you take your favorite Yeti Mug, too? I vote yes.

Getting to Bora Bora

All international travelers will need to enter French Polynesia in Papeete, Tahiti, at Faa’a International Airport (PPT).  Once in Tahiti, you can then take a domestic flight to Motu Mute Airport (BOB) in Bora Bora on Air Tahiti. Flights are usually around 45 minutes and cost around $450 roundtrip.

There is also a cargo ferry from Papeete to Bora Bora that allows passengers, but it is infrequent and not very reliable. The travel time is quite long. For this reason, to get the most out of your time in Polynesia, I recommend flying.

Getting to Your Bora Bora Resort

The Bora Bora airport is located on a mote. After arrival, all passengers will need to take a ferry to reach their resort on the main island or another mote.

Air Tahiti provides complimentary ferry service to the port village Vaitape on the main island as part of your ticket.

Most resorts offer shuttle transfers, either directly from the airport or from the dock at Vaitape. Luxury hotels arrange pick-ups directly from the airport, either for a fee or as a complimentary service. A few, like Le Taha’a, even offer helicopter transfers!

Before you book your flight and hotel, check the hours, price, and pick-up/drop off locations for transfers arranged by your resort. Note transfer costs and availability both to/from the airport and to Vaitape, since this is where many excursions begin.

Getting Around Bora Bora

Once you’ve arrived and settled in at your resort, you’ll surely want to plan some things to do during your stay! Your concierge can help arrange this, or it’s easy to book excursions online. Look for options that will arrange pick-up at your hotel dock;but note that you might have to get to the dock in Vaitape.

Renting a Car, Bike, or Scooter in Bora Bora

It’s possible to rent a car in Vaitape. Most travelers find that they don’t need them for the entire stay – just a day to see the island sights.

Traffic in Bora Bora travels on the right (like in the US) and the roads are well-paved and relatively easy to navigate. If driving at night, be extra cautious about bikes and scooters in the roadways without lights.

If you want to arrange a car rental ahead of time, you can reserve one on Expedia.

Bicyles, e-bikes, and scooters are also available to rent, as well as 2-seater buggies.

Taxis in Bora Bora

Taxis can be hailed or pre-booked on the main island of Bora Bora. Taxis might not be metered and prices can vary, so check before getting in and agree on a charge. After 7 pm, taxi charges increase.

Uber is not yet available in Bora Bora (or French Polynesia).

When to Visit Bora Bora

Bora Bora boasts a tropical climate that is inviting almost all year round. However, there are specific seasons and factors to consider when planning your trip, especially if you’re looking to avoid crowds or find more budget-friendly options.

High Season (May to October)

Also known as the Dry Season, this period sees little rainfall and plenty of sun, making it the peak time for tourism. Temperatures hover between 79°F (26°C) to 86°F (30°C).

It’s the best time for water clarity, ideal for snorkeling and diving. Keep in mind, though, that resorts and international flights might be pricier due to the influx of tourists.

Low Season (November to April)

Low season is also the rainy season. While it doesn’t mean constant rain, you can expect brief, heavy showers, and there’s a possibility of tropical storms or cyclones.

Temperatures range slightly higher but remain comfortable, often sitting between 80°F (27°C) to 88°F (31°C).

Fewer tourists mean you could score better deals on accommodations and have a quieter experience. However, some activities might be limited due to weather conditions. Even during the rainy season, water clarity is still decent.

• Rainy Season: If you’re looking to avoid the heaviest rainfall, it might be best to skip January and February, which tend to be the wettest months.

Shoulder Season

The months bridging the high and low seasons, primarily April and November, can be ideal for visitors. You can still enjoy relatively good weather, with slightly fewer tourists and more competitive resort prices.

Packing for Bora Bora Overwater Bungalows

Two bathing suits and three cover-ups. That’s it – that’s the Bora Bora packing list.

I’m kidding, of course! Not only will you be staying in fancy resorts, but you’ll be having adventures on land and underwater. So bring a light sweater too.

OK, for real, here are some tips on packing for Bora Bora:

• Check the dress codes of the restaurants at your resort.
• Find out the carry-on and checked baggage allowances for your airlines. For Air Tahiti, here are the checked bag limits, scuba equipment allowances, and extra fees.
• Try to pack as lightly as possible. You’ll have several flights and will need to transfer to your resort by water shuttle.
• You’ll be on an island where most things have to be imported (resulting in increased prices). Be sure to pack sunscreen and reef-safe sunscreen, aloe or after-sun, basic medications, band-aids and antibacterial ointment, insect repellent spray or wipes, and toiletries.
• Rashguard tops and fabrics with UPF protect from the sun better than sunscreen and are safer for reefs. I even have rashguard tights for snorkeling and prefer them because I burn so easily! There are also UPF scarves and cover-ups.
• Pack lightweight clothing, flowy dresses, shorts and tops for active days.
• Flip flops and sandals – leave the heels at home! Pack wedges if you must. If you plan on hiking, bring a pair of hiking sandals like these that are also good for boat excursions.
• Unless your resort provides them, a floatie like this is perfect for lounging in the water around your bungalow! (I know some people even bring a thin rope to tie to their deck ladder so they don’t float away.)
• A phone lanyard so you don’t accidentally drop your phone in the water when you fall asleep in a deck lounger or net
• A daypack or dry bag if you plan or doing excursions. This one is my favorite and it comes with a waterproof cellphone pouch.
• Outlet adapters or a power strip (although some resorts will supply them or have USB sockets). In French Polynesia, types C and E are the official standards like France and other French overseas territories. Since type F plugs are identical to type E plugs, they can also be used with type E sockets. The power voltage can vary – either 110 or 220v.
• A straw hat, sunglasses, and cute woven bag.
• I always pack my own prescription mask and snorkel; check with your resort to see if they provide these and fins.
• Some travelers buy alcohol at the duty-free shop during a flight connection to minimize on bar tabs at the resort! Throw some powdered cocktail mixers or drink mixes in your suitcase to go along with it. Just don’t forget about the baggage weight limit, since they will need to go in your checked bag to Bora Bora.
