Carvoeiro might just be the prettiest beach town in the Algarve. With its stunning beaches, rugged cliffs, and crystal-clear waters, Carvoeiro is a paradise for beach lovers and hikers. The town is also known for its restaurants and world-class golf courses, making it an ideal destination for travelers of all ages.

If you’re looking for a beautiful beach town to visit in Portugal, Carvoeiro is one of my favorites. This charming village is located in the Algarve region, known for its sun-drenched coastline and warm Mediterranean climate. When I visit Carvoeiro, I’m always charmed by its natural beauty, friendly locals, and delicious food.

Carvoeiro is best for travelers looking for a relaxing beach vacation. Those who like coastal walks, less-touristy beaches, boat trips, and golfing will love it here.  There are even some waterparks in the area which are popular day trips for families.

Carvoeiro, Portugal Overview

Carvoeiro is a picturesque resort town located in the southern part of Portugal, in the Algarve region. It is a popular holiday destination for families and couples due to its beautiful beaches, stunning rock formations, and clear waters.

Location and Geography

Carvoeiro is situated on the Atlantic coast, about 5 km south of Lagoa and 20 km east of Portimão. The town is built on cliffs and hills, and it is surrounded by beautiful beaches, such as Praia de Carvoeiro, Praia da Marinha, and Praia do Carvalho. The coastline is famous for its rock formations, including the Benagil Cave, which is best reached by boat tour.

How to Get to Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro is easily accessible by car or public transport. The nearest airport is Faro Airport, about 60 km away. From there, you can take a taxi or rent a car to reach Carvoeiro. The town is also well-connected by bus, with regular services running to and from Lagoa, Portimão, and other nearby towns.

History of Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro was originally a fishing village, but it has developed into a popular tourist destination over the years. Despite the growth in tourism, the town has managed to maintain its charm and character, with many of its historical landmarks still intact.

Top Attractions

Carvoeiro has plenty of things to see and do, making it a popular choice for travelers. Some of the top attractions include:

• Carvoeiro Boardwalk: a scenic walkway that runs along the cliffs and offers stunning views of the ocean and rock formations.
• Boat Tours: explore the coastline and visit the famous Praia da Marinha and Benagil Cave on a boat tour.
• Slide & Splash: a water park that offers fun for the whole family.
• Zoomarine: an aquarium and theme park that provides a unique experience for visitors.
• Golf: Carvoeiro is home to several golf courses, including the Vale de Milho Golf Club.

Overall, Carvoeiro is a lesser-known Algarve gem, but its beauty and natural features make it one of my personal favorites. With its clear waters, golden sand beaches, and steep cliffs, I loved staying here and hope you will too!

Beaches in Carvoeiro, Portugal

Any visit to the beautiful town of Carvoeiro must include the stunning beaches that surround it! Here are some of my favorite beaches in Carvoeiro.

Praia de Carvoeiro

The Praia de Carvoeiro is the main beach in town, and one of the most beautiful beaches in Algarve. With its calm waters and soft sand, it is the perfect place to relax and soak up the sun. The beach is surrounded by restaurants and bars, making it easy to grab a bite to eat or a refreshing drink. I highly recommend taking a stroll along the boardwalk, which offers stunning views of the coastline.

There are viewpoints overlooking the beach on either side, where you can snap pictures of the picturesque town and its beachfront.

Praia da Marinha

If you’re looking for a postcard-perfect beach, look no further than Praia da Marinha! This beach is famous for its clear blue waters, soft sand, and impressive rock formations. It is consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe.

If you want only to see the beach and coastline, you can take a boat tour which includes the Benagil Cave.  But for the best visit, drive or take a taxi and spend a few hours here, especially in the afternoon for sunset.

Praia da Marinha can also be seen on the coastal walk of the “Seven Hanging Valleys Trail.  It is also a perfect spot for sunset with several viewpoints overlooking the beach. 

There is a small snack bar here on the beach that takes cash only.  A parking lot is available as well.

Praia do Paraíso

Next up, my personal favorite: Praia do Paraiso. This beach is named after the Portuguese word for paradise, and it’s not hard to see why! The sand is soft and golden, and the water is clear and calm. The beach is surrounded by cliffs, giving it a secluded and intimate feel. 

There is a restaurant overlooking the beach here, Mar d’Fora, which has fantastic sunset views and excellent seafood.  (I’m allergic to shrimp and looked longingly at every dish of piri piri prawns that went by, destined for other tables!)

Praia do Paraiso is especially pretty at golden hour.  It is a short walk up from the town center.  There are concrete steps built into the cliffside to access the beach level.  A small parking lot is available, shared with the restaurant here.

Praia do Carvalho

For an even more secluded beach experience, head to Praia do Carvalho. This small beach is tucked away between cliffs, and is a bit more challenging to get to. The sand is golden, and the water is crystal clear, making it the perfect spot for swimming and snorkeling.

Access to Praia do Carvalho is via a tunnel with stairs that are carved through the rocky cliffs.

Parking is available in a lot above the beach, and you’ll find a small restaurant here, O Carcaça. (Although it is not very well-rated, so I recommend bringing your own snacks.)

Praia de Vale Covo

Praia de Vale Covo is another small and secluded beach that is perfect for a peaceful day in the sun. This is another beach backed by high cliffs, with soft golden sands. The views from above are stunning!

But take nore: Praia de Valo Covo is only accessible during low to medium tides, as the beach disappears entirely at high tide! There is also a cave that you can swim into at low tide.

It’s a bit tough to get to this beach: there are steps, but the last part is a scramble down the rocks.  Wear shoes to get to and back up from the beach.

The Tivoli Carvoeiro resort is here, but the beach itself is public.  There are no facilities on the beach, so be sure to bring everything you need for the day.

Praia de Vale Centeanes

Praia de Vale Centeanes is the next beach down the coast from Praia de Vale Covo. With its pretty shoreline, high dramatic cliffs, and crystal-clear waters, it offers a less-busy and relaxing setting for beachgoers.

There is a small restaurant here, Restaurante O Stop, with great views. Limited parking is available along the road to the beach.

Benagil Beach and Cave

Benagil Beach and its adjoining Benagil Cave is a natural wonder located along the Algarve coastline in Portugal. The beach is a popular spot for sunbathing and spending the day at a beach club.

However, the true highlight is the Benagil Cave, a sea cave with a cathedral-like dome and an natural skylight that allows sunlight to filter through. It’s best to visit the cave only by boat; the surf as well as the number of boats in the area make it unsafe for swimmers or kayakers.

At the beach, you can also visit the top rated Benagil Beach Club which offers food, cocktails, a sparkling pool and loungers.  (There is also a Benagil Beach Bar – less well-reviewed and without a pool!)

Parking is available in a lot above the cliffs.  Although this adds a bit of a walk, I recommend it instead of parking along the steep road down to the beach.

Boat Tours and Caves

A boat tour is a must-do activity in Carvoeiro! You will be able to explore the beautiful coastline, caves, and rock formations that make this area so unique. Some of the caves are only accessible by boat, so this is a great opportunity to see them up close. 

The most popular tour is to Praia da Marinha and Benagil Cave.  This is the tour I chose, which left directly from Carvoeiro Beach:

Coastal Walks

If you’re looking to explore the natural beauty of Carvoeiro, a coastal walk is the perfect way to do so! With its dramatic cliffs and expansive ocean views, Carvoeiro’s coastline is a hiker’s paradise. Here are two of the best coastal walks in Carvoeiro that you won’t want to miss:

Carvoeiro Boardwalk + Algar Seco

The Carvoeiro Boardwalk is a short and easy coastal walk that takes you along the town’s rugged coastline. This boardwalk starts at the town center and takes you 1 mile along the cliffs to the nearby Algar Seco. 

Walking along the boardwalk allows you to explore the different paths and tunnels that lead to hidden caves and pools.  Along the way, you’ll see sweeping views of the ocean and coast, as well as colorful boats bobbing in the water below.

The Algar Seco is a series of rock formations that have been eroded by the sea, creating a unique landscape. The most famous stop is at the end of the trail: a cave called “A Boneca” (The Doll). 

Inside A Boneca there are two eroded natural windows with a view to the ocean.  Legends say from the water, this cave looks like a doll with two eyes peering over the sea – hence its name!

A Boneca is a very popular photo spot during the summer months.  You can also have lunch, dinner or drinks at the Restaurante Boneca Bar here (be sure to check their hours during low season).

A few parking spaces are available on the road at the restaurant, if you prefer to drive.

Seven Hanging Valleys Trail

The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail is a longer coastal walk that takes you along some of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the Algarve region. This 6.7km trail starts in Carvoeiro and follow the coast and cliffs to the nearby town of Vale Centeanes. Along the way, you’ll see stunning rock formations, hidden beaches, and wildlife.

Golf Near Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro is also a favorite spot in Algarve for golfers, with several world-class courses in the area. The Vale de Milho course is a popular choice, as it offers stunning views of the ocean and is suitable for players of all levels.

Vale de Milho Golf Course

The Vale de Milho Golf Course is a beautiful 9-hole course located just outside of Carvoeiro. This course is known for its challenging holes and stunning views of the ocean. With its perfectly-manicured greens and challenging layout, the Vale de Milho Golf Course is a must-visit for golf enthusiasts vacationing here!

Gramacho Golf Course

The Gramacho Golf Course is an 18-hole championship course located just a short drive from Carvoeiro. With its beautiful fairways and challenging holes, the Gramacho Golf Course is a great option for anyone looking to improve their game while enjoying the natural beauty of Carvoeiro.

Forte de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação

Forte de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação is the remains of a historic fortress built in the 17th century to defend against pirates and invaders. The chapel here, Our Lady of the Incarnation, was almost completely destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The fortress and chapel were restored, but later fell into ruin again over the centuries.

Since then, the chapel has again been restored and is now used as a daycare. The site has little of the original fortress remaining. Still, you can stop here along the Carvoeiro Boardwalk trail for photos and ocean views, making it a great spot to learn about history and enjoy beautiful sunsets.

Slide & Splash Water Park

If you’re traveling with kids, the Slide & Splash Water Park is a must-visit attraction. It has a range of water slides and pools that will keep the whole family entertained for hours.

Zoomarine

Zoomarine is another great option for families. It’s a marine park that offers dolphin shows, sea lion shows, and a range of other animal exhibits. There are also several water rides and a beach area where you can relax and soak up the sun.

Escape Rooms in Carvoeiro

Families traveling with teens might be interested in taking a break from the beach with an escape room experience! Here are two choices with easy online booking:

Carvoeiro Tourist Train

Kids of all ages will love a tour of Carvoeiro on the tourist train. It departs every 40 minutes from the square at the bottom of the hill for a 30-minute trip around the town, stopping at all the main resorts.

On Tuesdays and Fridays there are tours to nearby Ferragudo, with a two hour stop to explore the village.

Dining in Carvoeiro, Portugal

When it comes to dining in Carvoeiro, there are plenty of options to choose from. Whether you’re looking for local cuisine or international flavors, you’ll find something to satisfy your appetite.

Local Food and Drink

One of the best things about dining in Carvoeiro is the chance to try traditional Portuguese dishes. Seafood is of course a staple of the local cuisine, and you’ll find fresh catches of the day at many restaurants.

Some of the most popular dishes include grilled sardines, octopus salad, and cataplana (a seafood stew). Don’t forget to try a glass of Vinho Verde, a refreshing Portuguese white wine that pairs perfectly with seafood.

Restaurants

Carvoeiro is home to many excellent restaurants, ranging from casual beachside cafes to upscale fine dining establishments. Reservations can be needed for the busy season, so pop in to reserve a table for an upcoming evening. Keep in mind that restaurants also might be closed one or two nights each week for staff days off.

In general, you’ll find the best restaurants aren’t beachfront, but it is really nice to dine right on the beach in the evenings!  Note also that some of the smaller places might take cash only.

• Gurkha Kitchen: This Nepalese restaurant serves up delicious curries and momos in a cozy atmosphere.
• Happy’s: Local favorite serving Portuguese dishes, seafood and fish and chips; cash only, and reservations are usually needed.
• Bon Bon: For a special occasion, head to this Michelin-starred restaurant for an unforgettable dining experience.
• Tapas da Vila: Friendly, family-run tapas and wine bar overlooking the beach.
• Le Cro Portugal: Small restaurant serving tapas and wine. Temporarily closed.
• Pani: Top-rated Indian restaurant with great service and views overlooking the beach.

Carvoeiro Hotels and B+Bs

Top Pick: Castelo Guest House

Resembling a castle and perched on a cliff above Carvoeiro Beach, Castelo Guest House has panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Carvoeiro fishing village, located a 2-3 minute walk. If you stay here, be sure to get a room with a terrace: you can have your breakfast delivered in a picnic basket and dine with a beach view!

Top Pick: Quinta do Ourives

Quinta do Ourives in Carvoeiro features bright guest rooms, an outdoor swimming pool, a garden, a bar, and a shared lounge. Private parking is available on site at this sustainable property. The accommodation also offers a shared kitchen.

Casa Carioca Carvoeiro

Casa Carioca Carvoeiro is a recently renovated bed and breakfast in Carvoeiro where guests can make the most of its outdoor swimming pool, garden, and bar just a 12-minute walk from Carvoeiro Beach. 

Hotel Carvoeiro Plaza

Located in the heart of the village, the Hotel Carvoeiro Plaza is located a few minutes’ walk to the beach. The outdoor pool features a terrace with sun loungers and bar. Some rooms enjoy panoramic views over Carvoeiro Beach, and there is a rooftop bar in season.

If you’re looking for a more luxurious stay in Carvoeiro, then a resort might be the right option for you!

Tivoli Carvoeiro

Located overlooking Vale Covo beach, the renovated 5-star Tivoli Carvoeiro is ideal for getaways and family holidays. From May 15th to October 15th, the hotel offers a free Tuk Tuk shuttle service to the nearest beaches, located around 3000 feet from the hotel. A restaurant and full-service spa are onsite.

Monte Santo Resort

This 5-star resort has a 6 outdoor swimming pool and offers spa facilities. Located about 1/2 mile from Carvoeiro Beach, it offers luxurious suites and linked villas with private balconies and panoramic views.

Algar Seco Parque

Located at the top of the hills overlooking the sea, Algar Seco Parque offers comfortable air-conditioned 1- or 2-bedroom apartments with access to outdoor pools just a 10-minute walk from the center of Carvoeiro, Algarve and its beautiful beach.

When it comes to exploring the area around Carvoeiro, there are plenty of options for day trips. Whether you’re interested in history, nature, or just soaking up the sun on a beautiful beach, here are a few of my favorite day trip destinations.

Silves

Silves is a historic town just a short drive from Carvoeiro. It was once the capital of the Algarve and is home to a beautiful castle that dates back to the 8th century.

The castle is well-preserved and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The town also has a charming historic center with narrow streets and traditional architecture.

Portimão and Praia da Rocha

Portimão is a larger town with a bustling marina and plenty of shops and restaurants. Just a short drive away is Praia da Rocha, a stunning beach with golden sand and clear blue water.

Portimão is a popular spot for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports. There are also several beach bars and restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat or a refreshing drink.

Albufeira

Albufeira is a lively town with a popular nightlife scene. During the day, you can explore the historic center with its whitewashed buildings and colorful tiles. There are also several beaches in the area, including Praia Falesia, which is known for its long beachfront and rust-colored cliffs.

Monchique

If you’re looking to escape the heat and hustle of the coast, head to Monchique. This charming mountain town is known for its natural beauty and fresh air. There are several hiking trails in the area, as well as a spa where you can relax and unwind.

Ferragudo

Ferragudo is a picturesque fishing village with narrow streets, colorful houses, and a beautiful beach. You can wander through the streets and soak up the atmosphere, or head to the beach for a swim or a paddle in a kayak. Local restaurants offer fresh seafood and local specialties.

Best Time to Visit Carvoeiro, Portugal

Carvoeiro is a popular destination year-round, but the best time to visit depends on your preferences. The summer months (June-August) are the busiest and most expensive, with high temperatures and lots of crowds.

If you’re looking for a more relaxed and affordable trip, consider visiting in the spring (March-May) or fall (September-November). These months offer milder temperatures, fewer crowds, and lower prices.

Fall is a delightful time to visit Carvoeiro, as the weather remains pleasant, and the crowds start to thin out. Plus, hotel rates and tour prices are generally more budget-friendly during this time.

Winter in Carvoeiro is mild, making it an attractive option for travelers seeking a quieter and more relaxed experience. However, keep in mind that some restaurants and attractions might have reduced hours or closures during the low season.

Getting to Carvoeiro, Portugal

Getting to Carvoeiro is relatively easy, with several transportation options available depending on your preferences and budget. Here’s a breakdown of how to get to Carvoeiro by bus, train, and car.

Bus

If you’re traveling from Lisbon or Faro, taking a bus to Carvoeiro is a convenient and affordable option. There are several bus companies that offer routes to Carvoeiro, including EVA Transportes, Rede Expressos, and FlixBus. Prices and schedules vary depending on the time of year and the company you choose, but you can expect to pay around €20-€30 for a one-way ticket.

Train

While there is no train station in Carvoeiro, you can take a train to the nearby town of Lagoa and then transfer to a bus or taxi to reach Carvoeiro. The train journey from Lisbon or Faro to Lagoa takes approximately 2-3 hours, and tickets can be purchased online or at the train station. From Lagoa, you can take a bus or taxi to Carvoeiro, which is only a short distance away.

Car

If you prefer to travel by car, renting a car is a great option to explore the Algarve region at your own pace. Car rental companies are available at both Lisbon and Faro airports, and it’s a straightforward drive to Carvoeiro via the A22 motorway. The journey from Lisbon takes approximately 2.5 hours, while the journey from Faro takes only 45 minutes.
