On my last trip to Tulum, I had not one, not two, but THREE people give me an “insider tip” that I should visit the Kaan Luum Lagoon instead of other cenotes in the area. I didn’t have the heart to tell them that I had already been, because they were so determined to help me find an off-the-beaten-path spot!

What is Kaan Luum Lagoon: A wide, freshwater lagoon that is mostly shallow, with a deep cenote at the very center.

Opening Hours: 9AM – 4PM during low season; during high season, it remains open until 5 or 6

Entrance Fee: $300 MXN or $100 for children under 11; an additional $150 MXN for a drone permit or to rent a kayak

Important notes: To protect the fragile biodiversity of the site, sunscreen (even reef-safe) is not permitted. Instead wear a rashguard with UPF fabric and a sun hat.

What is the Kaan Luum Lagoon in Tulum?

Kaan Luum is a wide but shallow lagoon deep in the jungle of Tulum, with a hidden secret: a 262-foot deep cenote in the middle! (That’s about 80m for you metric folks.) But don’t worry, the deep cenote area is clearly sectioned off, and only scuba divers can use this part of the lagoon.

The rest of us can spend the day swimming, paddling, and lazing in the sun around the unique and shallow lagoon.

Kaan Luum has beautiful colors, with the cenote forming a deep blue spot in the middle. The shallow edges have lighter colors of turquoise, blue, and green depending on the season and conditions.

The Kaan Luum Lagoon has freshwater, located inland from the coast. Which means that even if there is seaweed on the Tulum beaches, you won’t see any in the lagoon.

How Did Kaan Luum Lagoon Get Its Name?

Meaning “yellow earth” in the Mayan language, Kaan Luum was named for the soft clay that forms at the edges of the lagoon – or so say the legends. In any case, you might see people here treating themselves to a Mayan mud facial using this clay!

Things To Do At Kaan Luum Lagoon

Wondering how to fill your day at Kaan Luum? I’ve got plenty of ideas for you from sunbathing to kayaking and making everyone on Instagram jealous.

Sunbathe on the piers and dock

There are two piers which jut out into the lagoon, almost to the edge of the cenote. People spread out towels and sunbathe on the edge of the dock and along the pier. It’s also nice to sit on the pier with your feet in the water.

The water depth ranges from waist- to shoulder-deep.

Remember to leave your towel spread out to claim your spot if you want to go in the water.

Swim and snorkel

Laguna Kaan Luum has calm freshwater perfect for swimming. It’s also quite shallow — waist to shoulder deep in most parts — which makes it great for families and children. (Always be sure to supervise kiddos around the water, though!)

Beneath the surface, there isn’t a ton to see except some small fish at the edge of the mangroves. But it can be a great place to practice snorkeling! Bring your own gear, though, since it’s not available on site (unlike many other cenotes in the area).

Climb the tower for 360-degree views

Between the two piers, a tall tower has been constructed, which offers views of the lagoon and the surrounding jungle. If you don’t have a drone, you’ll definitely want to climb up for a birds-eye view and photos from above.

Rent kayaks or paddleboards

If you want to venture further out into the lagoon, the best way to do that is via kayak or paddleboard. Kayaks can be rented at the entrance for a fee of $150 MXN.

Pose for photos on the swings

You’ll definitely want to snag some photos for your Instagram at Kaan Luum, since most people will never have seen anything like it!

One of the most-photographed spots here are the swings over the water with the “Laguna Kaan Luum” sign. These are quite popular so grab a chance to get photos when you see them open.

Relax on the hammocks

Around the edges of the lagoon you’ll also find hammocks suspended over the water. This is another perfect place for photos – or a nap!

Picnic under the palapas

A cluster of palapas provides a cool shared area on the dock at the lagoon entrance. There are also benches for seating. If you arrive early in the day, you might be able to snag a spot here for the day.

There is also a larger pavilion with some seating by the second dock.

Where is the Kaan Luum Lagoon?

Laguna Kaan Luum is located about 15 minutes south of Tulum Centro. The lagoon is right off Highway 307 (Cancun – Chetumal/México 307), in the Tulum jungle. It’s located inland from the coastal beaches and just north of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere.

Distances and driving times from popular destinations in the area are as follows:

Tulum Centro to Kaan Luum Lagoon: 7miles or 12 km | about 15 minutes

Playa del Carmen to Kaan Luum Lagoon: 45 miles or 76 km | approx. 1 hour

Cancun to Kaan Luum Lagoon: 88 miles or 141 km | approx. 2 hours

How to Get to Kaan Luum Lagoon

The easiest way to get to Kaan Luum Lagoon is via car, taxi, or guided tour. There are also glamping spots and hotels nearby, like Zamna Tulum.

If you’re staying in Tulum, you could also ride a bicycle to Kaan Luum. From Tulum Centro, the distance is about 7 miles (11.5km), or a 35-minute bike ride.

Getting to Kaan Luum by Car [Easiest Way to Get to Kaan Luum]

Before you leave your hotel, I recommend downloading the Google map for Tulum to your phone, since cell service can get a little spotty outside town.

If you’re heading to Kaan Luum from Cancun or Playa del Carmen, you’ll follow Highway 307 (Cancun – Chetumal/México 307) down the coast and continue through Tulum Centro.

From Tulum Centro, drive 15 minutes south on Highway 307 (Cancun – Chetumal/México 307). Keep an eye out on your left for a sign for the glamping village Zil-Kaab. Then the entrance to the Kaan Luum lagoon is just past that on the left.

If the road begins to curve around to the left, you’ve gone too far.

After turning off Highway 307, follow the (rather bumpy) dirt road about ½ mile (600m) through the jungle to reach the parking lot. There are plenty of spaces here. I noticed some cars were permitted to continue down the path closer to the lagoon; I think this is possibly for divers with scuba gear.

The ticket window and entrance is off the parking lot. You’ll see it on the left as you head toward the path to the lagoon.

Getting to Kaan Luum Lagoon via Taxi

From Playa del Carmen or Tulum, it’s possible to take a taxi to Kaan Luum. If you do this, I would strongly encourage arranging for your driver to come back at a specified time for the return trip and agreeing on prices ahead of time.

From PDC, it’s about an hour to Kaan Luum; from Tulum town, about 15 minutes. I’ve heard from other travelers in the region lately that taxi drivers have been asking for much higher fares, so perhaps think about a tour or renting a car unless your hotel can recommend a reliable driver.

Be sure that your driver drops you off at the parking lot where the ticket window is. Otherwise, you will have to make a sweaty hike in from the highway!

Getting to Kaan Luum by Tour

If you want a more worry-free way to visit Laguna Kaan Luum, I recommend booking a tour. Several options even combine other nearby cenotes and sights, so you can maximize your day out!

Getting to Kaan Luum by Colectivo (Shared Public Van)

Throughout the region, there are colectivos – shared vans – that follow regular routes not unlike public buses. Colectivos are inexpensive and relatively quick ways to get around. The prices are posted on the window of the vans.

You’ll generally let the driver know where you’re headed when you enter, and then pay as you exit at the end of your ride. But keep an eye out and be sure the driver doesn’t miss your stop.

From Playa del Carmen, you can take a colectivo south to Tulum for about 50 pesos. In Tulum you’ll disembark and board a different route.

In Tulum, get on the colectivo towards Felipe Carillo (a small town about an hour south of Tulum). But be sure to tell the driver you’re getting off at Kaan Luum, and the driver will drop you off at the side of the highway. (Just keep an eye out to be sure he doesn’t forget!)

Kaan Luum is about 15 minutes south of Tulum Centro. From the highway dropoff spot, you’ll need to walk another 15 minutes (or ½ mile) along the road to the parking lot and cenote entrance.

There are basic amenities available for visitors at Laguna Kaan Luum.

Restrooms and Showers

There are restrooms and showers available at the lagoon. It’s recommended to rinse off in the showers before you enter the water, to remove any sunscreen residue, etc.

Food and Drinks

There is a small stand on the dock that sells chips, water, and other snacks. On some days, they might offer fresh coconuts too. But it’s best to bring your own snacks or picnic as well as drinks. Note: alcohol is not permitted.

What to Bring to Kaan Luum Lagoon

I recommend bringing along the following items to help you enjoy your day. Keep in mind that sunscreen is not allowed in the lagoon, to protect the delicate environment.

Bathing suit

Rashguard shirt: to protect yourself from the sun and the environment, wear a rashguard with UPF instead of sunscreen. (Also you won’t have to worry about missing a spot in the middle of your back!) My favorite is the Pacifica from Athleta, but you can also find inexpensive rashguards for women and for men on Amazon.

Towel: these microfiber towels pack small and dry quickly

Cooler: pack a soft-sided cooler with water, sodas, and snacks for the day (Pro tip: you can make any bag into a cooler with an insulated lightweight insert like this one!)

Sun hat + sunglasses

GoPro Hero for underwater photos; DJI Mini for drone shots

A waterproof phone pouch for taking photos in the water or this dry bag that also includes a phone case

A waterproof pouch to keep your phone, money, and keys in while swimming (I know they’re kind of lame but you really can’t see them under a rashguard)

What Not to Bring to Kaan Luum

Kaan Luum is run by a local cooperative focused on protecting the natural environment and animal species that live there, along with operating the lagoon for visitors to enjoy. Please respect their rules including not using sunscreen, not littering, and not smoking.

No sunscreen – to protect the environment, wear a rashguard and hat instead
No alcohol
No pets
No music speakers
If you bring bug spray, keep it for after you’re finished in the water. Or plan to use the showers before getting back in the water again.
