Odeceixe, Portugal is a seaside town in Portugal’s Costa Vicentina region. Found within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, this relatively undiscovered destination is a haven for surfers and nature lovers. It’s perhaps best known as a stop along the Rota Vicentina, a network of hiking trails offering sweeping coastal views and pastoral scenery through the Alentejo and Algarve regions of Portugal.
The beach of Praia de Odeceixe is a favorite of both surfers and families. The Rio de Seixe meets the sea here, looping around to form a horseshoe-shaped beach and calm lagoon.
This lagoon is perfect for swimming and paddleboarding, while the strong waves of the main beach draw a crowd of surfers and sun-worshippers.

Visiting Odeceixe, Portugal
Odeceixe is a village about 2.5 hours south of Lisbon, on the western Portuguese coast. The Faro airport is closer – about 1.5 hours away – but flight options to Lisbon are often better.
How to Get to Odeceixe
Public transport options to Odeceixe include buses and a train from Lisbon and other cities in the region. Check train routes here and buses here. To get to Praia Odeceixe from the village, you can take a quick taxi ride or walk about 2 miles (3km).
The best way to get to see Odeceixe, though, is by car. In this way, you can explore other beaches and sights in the region, or set off on a Costa Vicentina road trip like I did. I rented a car from Zest at the Lisbon Airport several times now, and had a smooth experience each time.

Thinking of renting a car for your trip? I’ve driven in Portugal many times and find it relatively easy, except in cities where roads can be narrow and parking limited! Another issue is that car rental agencies sometimes try to add on extra fees at the pickup counter or damage charges at the end of your trip. My last few trips I’ve booked with Zest, a car rental aggregator, to find the best availability and pricing. Odeceixe Village
Odeceixe is less than 10 minutes from its amazing beach, and has many options of hotels, guesthouses, farmstays, and camping as accommodation options. There are also several restaurants, shops, and a minimarket (more on this below). It’s located along N120, a winding, picturesque stretch of road that begins in Sines and continues on to Lagos.
Praia de Odeceixe Mar
Praia de Odeceixe Mar (or just Odeceixe Mar, as it’s referred to by locals) is a tiny hamlet perched on the cliffs overlooking the Odeceixe Beach. There are more hotels, guesthouses, and restaurants here, some with terraces and panoramic views, as well as surf shops.
The road to Odeceixe Mar becomes one-way as it passes a small car park and street parking on the approach to the beach. The road then loops around to an upper parking lot. If you have an RV or large campervan, or if the first lot is crowded, keep going past the beach entrance and restaurants to park in this upper lot.
Odeceixe Beach
The main beach of Praia de Odeceixe sits at the mouth of the Rio de Seixe (River Seixe), which forms the border here between the Algarve and the Alentejo regions of Portugal. Odeceixe’s wide sandy beach forms a horseshoe shape as the river loops around to the ocean. Its golden sands, clear turquoise waters, and whitewashed clifftop village make it one of the prettiest beaches in Algarve.
The beach has lifeguards on duty in season (usually May – October), as well as umbrellas and beach loungers for rent. Odeceixe is recognized as a global Blue Flag Beach for meeting safety, environmental, and accessibility standards.
Aspiring and experienced surfers can take lessons or rent equipment from the surf shops and school here. There is a clean public restroom with outdoor showers at the entrance to the beach.
The northern side of the river and beach are backed by steep cliffs common in Algarve. The southern side has a viewpoint perfect for sunrise and sunset, as well as restaurants with outdoor seating. Definitely plan to have sunset drinks here. Also, it’s hard to overstate how lovely and peaceful sunrise is here, so be sure to wake up early at least once during your visit to take in the stunning views!
Surfing at Odeceixe Beach
Praia Odeceixe has strong waves, making it a great destination for surfing and bodyboarding. There are surf schools here for lessons and surf gear rental: Odeceixe Surf School and Surf Seixe Academy. Private and group lessons are available, ranging from single day sessions to multiple days.
Praia das Adegas
A little further south of Odeceixe Praia, if you hike a few meters off the upper car park, you’ll encounter the path to a smaller beach. This protected cove is known as Praia das Adegas, and is designated as a naturist beach (clothing optional/nude beach). If this is outside your comfort zone, it’s still worth stopping to snap a photo of the cute beach sign at the start of the trail!

Staying in Odeceixe vs. Odeceixe Mar
If you’re coming to Odeceixe to surf, or are only staying one night, I recommend staying in Odeceixe Mar. This will allow you to be closer for sunrise and sunset viewing. You’ll also be right at the center of the beachside restaurants and surf community.
If you’re staying in the area longer (for example, using Odeceixe as a home base to explore more of the region like I did), you might want to stay in an apartment or farmstay.
I’ve got great options below for both areas, with online reviews and booking.
MY TOP PICK: Monte do Cardal. This farmstay outside Odeceixe village is a secluded escape with a spectacular pool, gorgeous gardens, and amazing sunset views. The staff was so kind and welcoming, and I’m still dreaming about their breakfast. Their Twin/double rooms are perfect for a solo traveler or couple, while the villas have space for a family or friends up to 4.

Things to do in Odeceixe Portugal
Unsurprisingly, the top activity in Odeceixe is surfing. Check out Odeceixe Mar’s surf schools here for lessons and equipment rental: Surf Seixe Academy and Odeceixe Surf School. Private and group lessons are available, ranging from single day sessions to multiple days.
Other water activities include stand up paddleboarding and kayaking on the Seixe River. Rent a kayak or paddleboard (and surf equipment) from Water Element.
Other Nearby Beaches
Praia Odeceixe is just north of the village. Heading south for a day trip, you’ll encounter a string of other beautiful beaches starting with Praia do Vale dos Homens and Praia da Carriagem. A bit further you’ll find the beautiful Praia da Amoreira, Praia de Monte Clérigo, Praia da Arrifana, and Praia da Bordeira. In particular, Amoreira and Bordeira are must-sees.
As you go south on N120, keep an eye out for a picturesque windmill near Rogil.
Hiking the Rota Vicentina Trails | Odeceixe Circular Routes
The Alentejo and Vicentine Coast regions feature 750km of walking trails. Longer options include “The Historical Way,” a classic route through local culture and nature trails, and the Fisherman’s Trail, named one of the most beautiful coastal trails in the world. There are also shorter circular routes that can be done in less than a day, like the “Odeceixe to the Sea” and “Odeceixe to the River” routes.
Odeceixe Restaurants
Odeceixe has many restaurant options which feature seafood as expected for a seaside town. Also keep an eye out for wild boar (porco preto or Iberian black pork) unique to Portugal.
In Odeceixe Mar, several restaurants are open only in the summer months, but Restaurate Dorita (at the guesthouse of the same name) is open year round. In summer, check out Bar da Praia and the top-rated Esplanada do Mar. Ponta Braca and Kiosk Agapito have great views.
In the village, try top-rated Restaurante Rivus, Assador Altinho and Naperon for local dishes. Ao Largo has great breakfast as well as lunch and dinner in a relaxed setting. If you’re craving pizza, head to the area’s best at Pizza Pasta & Compagnia in nearby Rogil.
Shopping in Odeceixe
There are a few small shops in Odeceixe village and beach. In the village there is a pharmacy open daily. Merceria Maria is a minimarket with basic food items and cooking and cleaning supplies. If you need more groceries, though, the Spar minimarket and Supermercado Fresquinho Amanhecer in nearby Rogil have more selection.

When to Visit Odeceixe, Portugal
Odeceixe is packed in the busy summer months, when beach-lovers and surfers flock here. September – June are the most popular months for hiking the Rota Vicentina. October is one of the top months for surfing in the Costa Vicentina; I also like visiting in the autumn when the weather is still temperate and the crowds are less.
The months of April, May and October have the best weather and fewer tourists, with pleasant average temperatures between 68 – 77 degrees F (20 – 25 degrees Celsius). The hottest month, July, has an average high of 84 degrees F (29 C). January, the coldest month, has an average maximum temperature of 60 F (16 C).

For surfing, the winter months are the best time to visit. Specifically, October is cited as one of the top months with the best waves.

Keep in mind that Portugal’s beaches are on the Atlantic Ocean waters. The waters of the Western Coast are generally several degrees cooler than beaches on the Southern Coast. Water temperatures in the summer months average around 68 degrees F, while winter temps in February drop below 60 degrees.
