Planning + Budgeting Tips for Maldives Travel
If this is your first visit to the Maldives, I want to let you know about a few budgetary things to consider before you get your heart set on a resort!
[If you just wanna see some gorgeous resorts, click here to skip ahead!]
Traveling to the Maldives begins with an international flight to Malé International Airport, the main international gateway to this island nation. But, remember, the Maldives is an archipelago of 26 atolls made up of over a thousand individual islands, many of which house the luxurious resorts we’re about to explore.
From Malé, travelers typically continue to their chosen resort via speedboat, domestic flight, or seaplane, depending on the distance and location of the resort from the capital.
Transfer Costs
Typically, resort transfers are arranged by the resorts themselves once you’ve confirmed your booking or as part of your reservation. The price can vary significantly depending on the resort’s location and the mode of transfer. On average, expect to pay anywhere from $150 to $500 per person for a round trip transfer.

Meal Plans at Resorts
Generally, once you get to your island, there won’t be restaurants accessible off-resort. So you should plan to take all your meals there unless you’re picking a hotel or guesthouse with restaurants nearby.
All of the resorts I’ve selected for this list offer at least “half board” at affordable prices. Many travelers find that a big breakfast and dinner are best with a lot of activities and light lunch in between. For this reason, half board could be a workable option for some! Other travelers might want to go for the full board or all inclusive option to avoid unexpected costs later.
Because different resorts might have different terminology, be sure to check what is included in each meal plan on the resort website. Keep an eye out for:
- Breakfast only – the only meal included will be breakfast
- Half board – generally breakfast and dinner are included
- Full board – breakfast, lunch, and dinner included; but alcoholic drinks might be extra
- All-inclusive – usually includes all meals plus alcohol
- All inclusive + transfers – the best way to avoid extra fees later!
Also keep in mind that resorts are mandated to charge a 10% service fee plus a 16% Tourism Goods and Services Tax – which adds 26% to every restaurant bill!

Booking Direct vs. with Expedia, Booking.com, etc.
You are likely to find the best deals and clear details on what’s included by booking direct with each resort. However, I recommend checking sites like Expedia to see if there are any sales or specials like transfers included.
For this reason, I’ve included the top booking sites as well as the TripAdvisor listing for each resort below, which links to the resort. This will help you compare prices and read recent reviews.
Prices In the List Below
In each listing I’ve included the lowest before-tax price of overwater villas that I could find. In many cases these prices are available during low season. Check around and consider dates before you book – I’ll include seasonal weather info and more tips at the end of the article!
But for now, let’s explore the cheapest Maldives overwater bungalows for your dream vacay!

Maldives Travel Tips + Frequently Asked Questions

Getting to the Maldives
Traveling to the Maldives begins with an international flight to Malé International Airport, the main international gateway to this island nation. But, remember, the Maldives is an archipelago of 26 atolls made up of over a thousand individual islands. This means that once you land in Malé, your journey isn’t over.
From Malé, travelers typically continue to their chosen resort via speedboat, domestic flight, or seaplane, depending on the distance and location of the resort from the capital. These costs are usually an extra fee in addition to your resort booking.
Speedboats, Domestic Flights, and Seaplane Transfers
Speedboats are generally used for resorts closer to Malé, typically within an hour’s journey.
Domestic flights, often followed by a short speedboat ride, are arranged by resorts further afield, located in the Southern or Northern Atolls.
What Are the Transfer Costs?
Typically, resort transfers are arranged by the resorts themselves once you’ve confirmed your booking. The price? It can vary significantly depending on the resort’s location and the mode of transfer. On average, expect to pay anywhere from $150 to $500 per person for a round trip.
Should You Choose A Resort Closer to Male?
Now, you might wonder if it’s better to choose a resort close to Malé. Well, it all depends on what you’re looking for. Resorts near the capital offer shorter transfer times, allowing you to start your vacation sooner. However, resorts further away offer a more remote, less crowded feel, and often more unspoiled natural surroundings.

Should You Choose an All-Inclusive?
An all-inclusive resort is generally the best option for avoiding watching your costs for every meal. Consider the meal plans carefully and look out for the different options offered by each resort. Here are a few common meal plans:
- Breakfast only – the only meal included will be breakfast
- Half board – generally breakfast and dinner are included
- Full board – breakfast, lunch, and dinner included; but alcoholic drinks might be extra
- All-inclusive – usually includes all meals and snacks plus alcohol
- All inclusive + transfers – the best way to avoid extra fees later!
What Are Some of the Other Costs That Add Up?
A 16% Goods and Services Tax (GST) is applied to all goods and services in the Maldives, including hotel stays and restaurant bills. Additionally, a Green Tax of $6 per person per night is charged at all resorts. Resorts also are required to add a 10% service charge which is split among staff – which adds up to a whopping 26% tax at restaurants and bars!
Be sure to verify whether these charges are included in your booking rates or if they are additional. And keep in mind they can really add up on restaurant bills unless you choose an all-inclusive plan.
Also, remember that nearly everything has to be imported in the Maldives. So be sure to pack toiletries, sunscreen, basic medications, etc. in your luggage.

Cultural Considerations in Maldives
The Maldives is a predominantly Muslim country where the sale and consumption of alcohol is prohibited on local islands. However, the rules are different at resorts, which have well-stocked bars and offer a wide variety of beverages for your tropical getaway!
Unfortunately, however, you can’t bring alcohol into the Maldives to save on restaurant bills, not even in your checked luggage or from duty-free shopping at the airport.
As for attire, it’s completely acceptable to wear bikinis, bathing suits, and other beachwear at the resorts. It is recommended, though, to dress more conservatively when visiting inhabited islands or Malé.
Weather in the Maldives
A picture-perfect paradise, the Maldives enjoys a sunny, year-round tropical climate. The temperature remains remarkably consistent throughout the year, with average daily highs around 86°F (30°C) and lows around 78°F (26°C).
The sea temperature is equally inviting, with an annual average of 82°F (28°C). However, like all tropical paradises, the Maldives does experience a rainy season.
The year is divided into two main seasons: the dry season (northeast monsoon) from November to April, and the wet season (southwest monsoon) from May to October.

Dry Season (November to April)
During the dry season, the Maldives enjoys plenty of sunshine and little rainfall, making it the best time to visit for beach and sun lovers. The seas are calm, and the visibility for snorkeling and diving is at its best. It’s also the peak tourist season, so resorts may be busier, and prices can be higher.
February to April is considered the hottest period with the least amount of rain.
Wet Season (May to October)
The wet season sees more rain, particularly from June to August, but showers are often brief and followed by clear skies. Despite being the rainy season, there are still plenty of hours of daylight, and the Maldives remains warm.
The sea is a little rougher, and visibility is lower, but this is the best time to see manta rays and whale sharks. Travel during this time can often be cheaper, and resorts are less crowded.
Shoulder Seasons
The months of May and November are considered the shoulder seasons in the Maldives. These periods represent the transition between the dry and wet seasons and can offer a good balance of weather and pricing. There may be a mix of rain and sunshine, but crowds are often thinner, and rates more competitive.
In conclusion, while the dry season is often considered the best time to visit the Maldives, the wet season also has its charms and advantages. It’s essential to note that the Maldives lies outside the cyclone belt, so there’s no traditional hurricane season to avoid.
Best time to Visit Maldives for Cheaper Prices
The best time to visit for off-season pricing and fewer crowds is from May to November. Avoid holidays like Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter, when many other travelers tend to plan vacations, and prices increase.
