Praia do Camilo | Best Beach in Lagos

Backed by towering golden cliffs, Praia do Camilo in Lagos is world-famous for its rock formations and secluded feeling. The beach is accessed via a long zig-zagging staircase of 225 steep steps.  

Praia do Camilo is actually two beaches connected by a tunnel through the rock cliffs, making it an especially exciting spot for kids to visit.  The sand is soft and nice to walk on.

Things to Do at Praia do Camilo

Visitors at Camilo Beach are drawn to the calm waters and scenery, perfect for swimming and snorkeling.  The water here is protected from large waves by the rock formations at nearby Ponte da Piedade.  

The best snorkeling is off the beach to the left, as you face out toward the water.  Beneath the surface you’ll find small fish and sea grass beds. Snorkelers will probably want a wetsuit, though, as the Atlantic waters are cold even in summer.

The O Camilo restaurant above the beach offers local cuisine and a great vista over the coastline.

While the views are unbeatable, the steps at Praia do Camilo are not suitable for travelers with mobility issues.  Pack light for this beach day, since you’ll need to carry everything back up at the end of your trip.

Getting here: Walk from town in about 30 minutes (1.2 miles).  Or take the Lagos Tourist Train to Praia Dona Ana and walk from there about 10 minutes.  Uber is also available in Lagos, or you can rent a car.

Praia Dona Ana | Picturesque Beach with Unique Rock Formations

Praia Dona Ana is one of the most popular beaches in Lagos, marked by its dramatic cliffs, sheltered bay, and turquoise waters. While popular and often crowded in high season, the beach maintains a charm that appeals to locals and tourists alike.

Dona Ana Beach is also close to several hotels and restaurants, and only about 1 mile from the center of Lagos.  It’s possible to walk to this beach from downtown in about 20 minutes.

In 2015 the beach underwent reconstruction: sand was added to expand the size of the beachfront.  This made room for beach loungers and umbrellas which are now available for rent in-season.

The beach’s rocky coastline and rock formations make for great views and dramatic photos. There is also a small viewpoint here overlooking the beach.

A set of steps here take visitors down to the beach, although not as many as Camilo Beach.  The golden sand here is coarser than other Algarve beaches, and there are more shells.

Things to Do at Praia Dona Ana  

Dona Ana Beach is a good beach for sunbathing and snorkeling.  The water here is clear and snorkelers will find a rocky coastline with a reef and marine life.  It’s possible to snorkel from here to the next beach over, Praia do Pinhao.  Snorkelers will want a wetsuit, though, as the Atlantic waters are cold even in summer!

This beach gets busy in summer, so come early.  It’s also a good spot for sunrise.

The beach restaurant here unfortunately has poor reviews. Pack snacks and drinks for your beach stay, or head up to the Carvi Beach Hotel rooftop restaurant overlooking the beach.

Praia Dona Ana Visit Tips

Getting here: Walk from town in about 20 minutes (1 mile).  Alternatively, you can take the Lagos Tourist Train to Praia Dona Ana.  Uber is also available in Lagos, or you can rent a car.

Meia Praia | Largest Beach in Lagos

Meia Praia is the largest and most spacious beach in Lagos, stretching over 2.5 miles (4 kilometers). With its expansive area, you can enjoy sunbathing, beach walks, and water activities without feeling overcrowded. Unlike many other Algarve beaches, Meia Praia is backed by sand dunes instead of imposing cliffs.

Meia Praia is also so large, its two halves are known by different names: Praia de São Roque and Praia do Vale da Lama.

Things to Do at Meia Praia

The western end, known as Praia de São Roque, is a hotspot for surfing, paddleboarding, and kayaking. Here, you can rent equipment from beach shacks and relax on comfortable loungers or under thatched umbrellas. Enjoy a refreshing drink or a casual meal at one of the bars and restaurants.

For a quieter and more serene experience, head to the eastern end of the beach, called Praia do Vale da Lama. While there are fewer dining options, you may come across some nude sunbathers in this area due to its more remote location. Windsurfing enthusiasts also frequent this part of the beach.

All of Meia Praia is great for sunbathing and beach walks, given its soft sands and extended beachfront.  It’s popular with families with children as well; the surf is usually calm .

Getting here: Meia Praia is convenient from Old Town Lagos, with the option to drive or take a short walk from the town center. Simply use the bridge in the marina to cross and then head towards the beach. If you prefer to drive, there are four parking lots available along road that follows the beach.

Praia Porto de Mós | Family-Favorite with Impressive Cliffs

Praia Porto de Mós is one of my favorite Lagos beaches. Located at the city’s southwest end, this stunning beach boasts a long stretch of golden sand backed by massive cliffs.

With access by car, a large parking area, and a convenient bus service from Lagos, getting here is easy.

Not only does Praia Porto de Mós provide a tranquil setting, but it also offers great amenities. Enjoy clean restrooms and the convenience of having several large resorts within walking distance. Families will love the soft sands and calm, shallow sections of the beach.

Things to do at Praia Porto de Mos

Praia Porto de Mós offers plenty of space to relax and find your perfect spot. And if you’re a water sports enthusiast, the surf conditions here are ideal for bodyboarding and even surfing.

During low tide, you can even explore the east side of Porto de Mos as it connects with Praia do Canavial. And when hunger strikes, there are two restaurants nearby offering tasty dining options and refreshing drinks.

Praia do Canavial | Secluded Lagos Beach

Praia do Canavial is a stunning beach located west of Lagos, adjoining Porto de Mos. This peaceful oasis is renowned for its natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere. To access the beach, you’ll navigate a narrow and steep pathway, so this is a beach for adventurous souls!

During low tide, you can also reach Praia do Canavial from Praia Porto de Mós. This alternative route allows for even more exploration and enjoyment of the surrounding cliffs and rock pools.

What sets Praia do Canavial apart is its peacefulness. However, it’s worth noting that there are no amenities like restaurants, restrooms, or loungers on the beach itself. Make sure to come prepared.

In fact, Praia do Canavial is so secluded that you may even encounter some nude sunbathing! So if you prefer a more liberating beach experience, you’ve found the perfect spot.

Praia da Batata | Closest Beach to City Center

Praia da Batata offers visitors easy access and a blend of urban convenience with golden sands. Just a short walk from town, it’s a popular choice for both tourists and locals. This is the closest beach to Lagos Old Town, located at the Fort of Lagos, or Forte da Ponta da Bandeira.

This beach’s name translates as “Potato Beach.”  Legend has it that once a boat shipwrecked here, and its cargo of potatoes floated ashore!  (If it was summer, those were some hot potatoes!)

Praia da Batata is located between the jetty of Ribeira de Bensafrim and Praia dos Estudantes.  The eastern part of Batata has unique rock formations with tunnels where it connects to Praia dos Esudantes.

Things to Do at Praia da Batata

Sheltered by cliffs, the beach provides a peaceful setting, even during the busy summer months. Its calm waters and wide beach make it a good spot for sunbathing and swimming.  

Another popular activity at Praia da Batata is kayaking.  Many tours to Ponte da Piedade depart from here, or you can rent a kayak, paddleboard, or even a sailboat from one of the shops along the beach. 

If you want a snack or a drink during your stay, Batata Beach Bar has light bites and cocktails. There is also the popular Mar restaurant on the cliffs above Batata Beach. Or better yet, head to Pinhao Restaurant or Nah Nah Bah less than a 10-minute stroll away in town.

Getting there: Praia da Batata is located next to the main road and promenade of Lagos, Avenida dos Descobrimentos.  From the center of Old Town, it’s about a 10-minute walk.

Parking: There is parking at the Mar restaurant; or park in Old Town and walk to the beach.

Praia dos Estudantes | Quiet Beach Accessible by Rock Tunnels

You won’t want to miss the less-visited gem of Praia dos Estudantes, near Lagos’s city center! This small beach is famous for its Roman bridge and stunning photo opportunities. Accessible on foot from town, it’s a must-visit spot, especially during high season.

The beach has an iconic Roman-style archway that provides a picturesque setting for photographs and exploration at low tide. The bridge is a remnant of the Pinhao Fortress, which was destroyed by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.

The beach is accessible from Praia da Batata, and is actually two smaller beaches separated by a rock tunnel.  The sea is usually calm, with the coves along this coast protected from strong ocean currents by Ponta da Piedade.

Things to do at Praia dos Estudantes

Praia dos Estudantes means “Students’ Beach,” but this spot is a favorite of beach-lovers of all ages.

While there are no facilities or beach chairs available, fear not! Just a short stroll away, you’ll find a beach bar at Praia da Batata and a variety of restaurants in town.

During low tide, adventurous souls can go from Praia da Batata to Praia dos Estudantes and Praia do Pinhão through a series of three human-made tunnels in the rocky cliff formations.

Getting here: The beach is only accessible by tunnels through the cliffs from Praia da Batata or from Praia do Pinhao (at low tide).

Praia do Pinhão | Secluded Beach for Sunbathing, Swimming + Snorkeling

Praia do Pinhão is one of the least-visited beaches in Lagos. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs, this small and secluded beach offers a tranquil escape from the crowds. Its rock formations createa dramatic backdrop and provide shade in the afternoon.

Please note that there are no restaurants, loungers, or other amenities available. Make sure to bring everything you need for a comfortable stay. Just keep in mind the steep steps that lead to this idyllic beach.

Getting here: Follow R. José Formosinho to a dead-end. Limited parking is available along the street. Don’t be discouraged by the graffiti and rough appearance, as the beach itself is peaceful and uncrowded.

Ponte da Piedade Beaches | Deserted Beaches Accessible by Boat, SUP or Kayak

Ponte da Piedade is a stunning natural landmark at the southern point of Lagos. It’s known for its dramatic cliffs, grottoes, and sea arches.

Ponte da Piedade offers some of the Algarve’s most beautiful coastal scenery. You can get some great sea views by hiking the trails above the cliffs, but its caves and beaches are best accessed by water.

To get to the Ponte da Piedade beaches, take a boat ride from the Lagos Marina, rent a paddleboard, or take a kayak tour. Group tours and private tours are available including sunrise and sunset tours.

Note that during high season, it could be difficult for boats to allow passengers to disembark if there is heavy traffic. For this reason, a morning paddleboard or kayak tour might give you the best chances to see the grottoes and disembark at pristine beaches.

• Follow posted signs and guidelines: There are signs at the entrance of many beaches with visit tips. Also be sure to follow surf warning flags and instructions provided by lifeguards.
• No littering: Please help keep the Lagos beaches clean by using trash bins and recycling facilities, or by packing out everything you bring when these aren’t available.
• Dogs on beaches: Most beaches in Lagos don’t allow dogs. If you do bring your furry friend, be sure to clean up after him or her.
• No camping or fires: Overnight camping and open fires are generally not allowed on beaches in Lagos.

Safety Tips

• Beware of rockfalls: On beaches backed by high cliffs, there is a possibility of rockfalls or stones coming loose and falling onto the beach. You should keep a safe distance from the cliffs, and take care if you are walking along the cliff top, staying well back from the edge.
