The first Sandals resort opened in 1981; back then, the choice was easy. The portfolio has since grown to 17 resorts on 8 Caribbean islands, which makes finding the best Sandals resort for your trip a little more involved. That’s where this guide comes in, with every resort rated, ranked, and reviewed so you can book with confidence.

Wondering which Sandals resort is best for foodies, which has the most pools, or which is the perfect setting for a destination wedding?  Which resort has the best beach?  And what about watersports, entertainment, and quickest transfer time from the airport?

Narrowing the choice of resorts down to just one might seem like an impossible task!  Here are some tips to help you sort:

• Read through this article and get an idea of where the resorts are, the amenities, and the general vibe at each.  Decide on a budget for your trip including flights.

• Make a list of your “must-haves” (like lots of restaurants or great scuba sites) and “deal-breakers” (like a small beach area or long transfers from the airport). Perhaps you already have your heart on an island – this makes it simpler!

• Search flights to some of your top pick resorts (I’ll add links below to make it easy) for your travel dates; use this to narrow your choices. Remember, the less time you spend in travel is more time on the beach… but sometimes longer flights are worth it!

• Take your top 2-3 resorts and narrow it further, looking at available rooms, 7-7-7 Specials, and any other resort deals for your dates.

Sandals Dunn’s River in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, opened in 2023 and quickly became the go-to for Sandals lovers in Jamaica!  The resort is completely updated, and guests are rave about the stellar guest service, gourmet restaurants, and luxury suites.  The resort was awarded Jamaica’s National Quality Award for Excellence in Service for 2025.

For those who love the water, Dunn’s is a resort that has both a great pool scene and a beautiful beach. The layout offers five pools, including two beautiful river pools and an infinity pool with beach views.  And while the beach itself is on the smaller side, it’s still lovely with calm water and watersports like snorkeling, kayaking, Hobie cats, and a glass-bottom boat.

Guests can enjoy endless gourmet dining with 12 restaurants serving up everything from early breakfasts to late-night snacks. Plus, there are 9 bars, including a lively swim-up bar, so unlimited tropical cocktails are always on tap. 

Dunn’s River also gets great reviews of its restaurants and bars, in particular its Rum Club bar which was the first one in the Sandals family. Guests love the sushi at Hanami, lobster at Edessa, pizza at Isola and the Jerk Shack for local flavor!

Feedback on the resort’s entertainment is positive, from live shows to chill beach bands. And for those looking for a bit more action, there are day trips to see nearby waterfalls including the resort’s namesake as well as catamaran cruises.

While there are a few downsides like mosquitos (pack bug spray!) and a longer airport transfer unless you can catch the daily American Airlines flight from Miami, they won’t spoil the overall experience. Guests who’ve stayed at Sandals Saint Vincent tend to agree on a few big things: the setting is gorgeous, the food is a standout, and the overall feel is calm and romantic while still social.

The pool scene gets strong reviews with both a large main pool plus smaller, quieter pools. The beach is small and cove-style rather than long and wide, but most guests like the calm water, soft sand, and tucked-away feel. It’s often described as more private and scenic.

On property, guests enjoy a good mix of included water sports, scuba, and low-key daytime activities. Scuba lovers report high-quality dive sites all within about 30 minutes from boarding the boat to getting in the water. When guests do leave the resort, popular picks include island tours, boat trips, and exploring more of St. Vincent’s coastline, but this is generally viewed as a “stay-put and relax” resort first.

The main downsides you’ll see are slower service at peak times and a desire for more vegetarian or vegan options without special requests.

Service feedback is strong overall, especially in butler-level rooms. In standard and club-level rooms, most people report friendly staff and a welcoming feel, but you’ll hear more mixed comments about slow bar or restaurant service and the occasional housekeeping miss on busier days.

Rooms are widely described as spacious, stylish, and comfortable and a clear step up from older, more traditional Caribbean hotel rooms. Villa and overwater categories get some of the loudest praise.

Sandals Saint Vincent isn’t perfect: service can feel a bit uneven outside butler rooms, flights and transfers take more effort than Jamaica or Grenada, and some of the bathroom layouts are more “design statement” than practical. But if you’re willing to trade a little convenience for a secluded cove, modern rooms, and some of the best food in the Sandals lineup, it delivers a splugeworthy stay.

Guests love the Club-level beachfront walkout rooms here, the excellent scuba locations, and being able to snorkel right off the beach. The lively main pool has a swim-up bar, while the pool close to the beach is quieter.

Those who aren’t as fond of Sandals Grenada cite the small cove beach, its location on the Atlantic side of the island, and smaller resort feel with less nightlife. But most guests recommend it as their favorite of all the Sandals properties.

It’s one of the few resorts on the island to feature over-the-water bungalows.

Sandals Grande St. Lucian is known as the most lively of the St. Lucia Sandals. It’s famous for its stunning beach, located on the calm waters of Rodney Bay. This resort is also adjacent to Pigeon Island National Park, paradise for history buffs and adventure lovers, offering interesting historical sites and hiking trails.

If you love the idea of St. Lucia for a honeymoon or romantic escape, but want a smaller resort with a more intimate vibe, both Sandals Halcyon Beach and Regency La Toc are best bets, too.

Ochi is more suited to pool-lovers: with its impressive 105 pools, you’re never far from a spot to take a dip and cool off.

There are a few tradeoffs at Ochi: the small beach, longer airport transfer, and that the rooms are more basic and aren’t as updated. It’s also a large resort, so if you don’t like walking, be sure to choose a room close to your favorite amenities – or plan to use the “hop,” an on-resort shuttle. (Butler rooms can have their butler shuttle them via golf cart!)

Overall, if you’re looking for an affordable all-inclusive vacay, want the largest variety of restaurants, or want to have a Club or Butler level room at a reasonable price point, Ochi could be your best bet!

This newer and more upscale resort offers a fresher feel, including new swim-up suites and rondaval villas. The South Seas Pool is calm with a swim-up bar, and there’s also a rooftop infinity pool and another infinity pool close to the beach for a more lively vibe.

On the Royal Barbados side, all of the rooms are Butler or Club level, offering up most luxurious rooms between the two resorts.

With 9 restaurants, including a rooftop restaurant and various specialty dining options, the culinary experience is diverse and exciting. Nightlife is more active, featuring a rooftop bar, a popular bowling alley, and live shows and piano bar — which keep many guests out late!

Comparing the two/general feedback

Both resorts share stunning beaches with crystal-clear waters and white sands. The surf here can be a bit rough and there is seaweed at times, but this varies based on weather conditions.

Guests love the wide array of amenities and dining options: 20 restaurants between the two resorts, ensuring you won’t have to eat at the same restaurant twice, unless of course you want to!

Reviews of the resorts are uneven – guests either LOVE the Sandals Barbados resorts or say they won’t return. In general, if you’re a go-with-the-flow traveler, you’ll likely enjoy the laid-back vibes, nightlife, and many amenities at Sandals Barbados and Royal Barbados.

One note for beach cabana lovers: the optional day-rental cabanas here are pop-ups, since it’s not permitted to have permanent structures on beaches here.

Weather: What to Expect by Seasons

The best time to visit Sandals Resorts in the Caribbean generally falls between December and April. During these months, the weather is typically dry and sunny, ideal for beach activities and outdoor adventures. This period is considered the Caribbean’s high season due to the weather and because of wintry conditions in much of the US, which attracts many visitors seeking a tropical climate.

However, for those looking to avoid crowds and potentially find lower rates, the months of May and June can be a sweet spot. The weather is still relatively good, and the peak tourist season has tapered off.

When is Hurricane Season?

The Caribbean hurricane season generally lasts from June to November, with September and October often seeing the highest storm activity. Barbados and Grenada are situated towards the southeastern Caribbean, which generally falls outside the main hurricane belt. Curaçao is also located outside of the typical hurricane belt. Curaçao is in the southern Caribbean, near the coast of Venezuela, which is generally less affected by hurricanes.
